چکیده

a. Mathematical upscaling: derivation of coarse-scale equations directly from atomistic equations using Generalized Mathematical Homogenization theory (Fish, Chen, Li, 2007). b. Computational upscaling: reducing the complexity of solving an atomistic problem to a manageable size that can be adapted based on available computational resources. Our model reduction approach is based on the space-time multilevel method (Li, Waisman, Fish, 2007). In the regions where the Generalized Mathematical Homogenization is estimated to be inaccurate (Nuggehally et al, 2007), a concurrent AtC bridging approach is employed (Fish et al, 2007) ( Badia et al, 2007). c. Model calibration: solving an inverse problem for calibration of fine scale parameters (interatomic potentials) by minimizing the error between the experimental data and multiscale simulations (Oskay, Fish, 2007).

Blending Methods for Coupling Atomistic and Continuum Models

In this paper we review recent developments in blending methods for atomistic-to-continuum (AtC) coupling in material statics problems. Such methods tie together atomistic and continuum models by using a bridge domain that connects the two models. There are several reasons why AtC coupling methods (of which blending methods are a subset) are important and have been subject to an increased inter...

On Atomistic-to-continuum (atc) Coupling by Blending

A mathematical framework for the coupling of atomistic and continuum models by blending them over a subdomain subject to a constraint is developed. Using the framework, four classes of atomistic-to-continuum (AtC) blending methods are established, their consistency is studied, and their relative merits discussed. In addition, the framework helps clarify the origin of ghost forces and formalizes...

A priori error analysis of two force-based atomistic/continuum models of a periodic chain

The force-based quasicontinuum (QCF) approximation is a nonconservative atomistic/continuum hybrid model for the simulation of defects in crystals. We present an a priori error analysis of the QCF method, applied to a one-dimensional periodic chain, that is valid for an arbitrary interaction range, large deformations, and takes coarse-graining into account. Our main tool in this analysis is a n...

Connecting Atomistic-to-Continuum Coupling and Domain Decomposition

Many atomistic/continuum coupling algorithms utilize an overlapping subdomain method, where boundary data for local solves in atomistic and discretized continuum subdomains is provided from local solves in neighboring subdomains. Such coupling algorithms are closely related to the classical alternating Schwarz domain decomposition method, although little to no convergence or error analysis exis...
